Oral Cancer Checks A Key Part of Your Dental Visit

Did you know that oral cancer screenings are a standard part of your regular dental check-up? Many people don’t realise that their dentist is not only looking after their teeth and gums, but also checking for signs of oral cancer during every visit.
Oral cancer can sometimes develop without obvious symptoms, which is why these screenings are so important. While most findings are minor and resolved on their own, your dentist is trained to identify anything unusual and guide you on the next steps if needed.
What happens during an oral cancer screening?
An oral cancer screening is a quick, painless and essential part of your routine dental exam. Here’s what your dentist does:
- A Visual Check: Your dentist examines your face, neck, lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat for any unusual changes, like white or red patches, lumps, or sores that don’t heal.
- A Gentle Feel: They may also feel the lymph nodes in your neck and the tissues inside your mouth to check for lumps or irregularities. Your dentist might also gently examine underneath your tongue to ensure nothing is missed.
- Why It Matters: These screenings help identify changes that may need monitoring or further investigation, ensuring you stay on top of your oral health.
What if something is found?
If your dentist spots something unusual, here’s what happens next:
Documentation: The area is noted in your chart, often with a photo and measurements, and described in detail.
Discussion: Your dentist will have a calm, honest conversation with you about what’s been found, what to monitor, and the next steps if needed.
Referral: If the issue hasn’t been resolved within 14 days or your dentist believes it requires further investigation, you may be referred to an oral medicine specialist or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for a closer look or a biopsy.
Why regular check-ups are important
Oral cancer can sometimes develop without pain or obvious symptoms, making regular dental check-ups essential.
Early identification of changes - whether they’re minor or require further investigation - can make a big difference in proactively maintaining your oral health.
