Born and raised in India before moving to Australia, Dr Rupan Kaur worked her way across a number of big-city dental practices in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney, before deciding she’d like to try a slightly more laidback lifestyle!

Now based at our Shepparton practice, we chatted to Dr Rupan about what she enjoys most about dentistry, what she’s looking forward to in her new role, and how she feels about being the only female dentist at National Dental Care Shepparton.

Dr Rupan, tell us a little about your background and how you got into dentistry

I’ve always had a really keen interest in dentistry - it’s been something I’ve wanted to pursue ever since I was a child growing up in India. As soon as I had the opportunity to study dentistry and embark on my career in this field, I just jumped at the chance!

What do you like most about being a dentist?

I really enjoy the whole process of helping people with their oral health and getting to see my patients’ reactions to the results of their treatment; it’s always so rewarding to see a big beautiful smile on someone’s face and know they’re incredibly happy with the outcome.

I also like the fact that I can help people overcome the pain they may be experiencing due to oral health issues, so they can move forward without discomfort.

You recently joined our Shepparton practice - what are you looking forward to about working here?

Since moving to Australia, I’ve mainly worked in dental practices based in big cities, such as Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney - so to be honest, I really wanted to get out of the big smoke and enjoy working in a more family oriented, tighter knit community.

I researched the Shepparton practice before I moved here and I like the fact it’s a very well- established clinic. Although quieter than some of the big city practices (which I love!), it’s fully equipped with the latest dental technology which is fantastic.

I’m also excited about being the only female dentist at Shepparton and I’m looking forward to adding a ‘female touch’ to the practice! There are many reasons why some patients prefer to see a female dentist, including a gentler touch and a lot of women having an empathetic nature with people, so I’m looking forward to offering my services to these particular patients – as well as to our younger patients with our children’s dentistry services.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I really enjoy cooking, so that’s something I love spending my time doing when I’m at home. I’m also a keen gardener, so when I’m not in the practice I can often be found tending to my plants!

If you had to give any advice to parents about encouraging good oral health in their kids, what would it be?

The most basic advice is often the best, so I’d definitely reiterate the importance of ensuring your children brush their teeth twice a day and keep up with this key oral hygiene habit.

In addition, it’s important to limit the amount of sugary snacks you give to your kids, especially between mealtimes. While the occasional treat is absolutely fine, it’s best not to make a habit of snacking on sweet foods at random times during the day.

Finally, what’s your number one oral hygiene tip, regardless of age?

The number one piece of advice I can give anyone who wants to keep their oral health in the best condition is simply to floss. If you can get into the habit of doing this once a day, your teeth will definitely thank you!
