We understand
Nervous about the dentist? Tell us. For some people, even making a dental appointment can feel overwhelming.
You may have had an uncomfortable experience in the past, feel worried about pain or simply feel uneasy about not knowing what to expect. Dental Centre Maroochydore's approach begins with getting to know you and discussing any worries or dental concerns before treatment. When care is required, the practice aims to provide it as gently as possible.
Common Reasons for Dental Anxiety
Fear of Pain
Worrying that an examination or treatment may be uncomfortable.
Previous Experiences
A difficult dental experience in the past can affect how you feel about future appointments.
Feeling Out of Control
Some people find lying back in the dental chair or not knowing what will happen next uncomfortable.
Sounds & Sensations
Dental equipment, sounds, smells or sensations can trigger nervousness for some patients.
Feeling Self-Conscious
You may feel embarrassed about how long it has been since your last appointment or the condition of your teeth.
Whatever is making you nervous, letting our team know allows us to better understand how we can support you.
Our Approach to Anxious Patients
Before beginning treatment, we take time to understand your concerns, previous experiences and what would help you feel more comfortable.
Knowing what is going to happen can help remove some of the uncertainty around dental treatment. Our dentists can talk you through your options and answer your questions before you decide how to proceed.
Dental care doesn't need to feel rushed. Your treatment can be discussed and planned around your individual needs.
If You've Been Avoiding the Dentist
If You've Been Avoiding the Dentist
If anxiety has kept you away from the dentist for months or even years, the hardest part can simply be making that first appointment. Our focus is on understanding where you are now, what concerns you have and what care may be appropriate going forward. You can start with a conversation. From there, we'll help you understand your oral health and discuss your options one step at a time.
Why Early Care Can Help
Avoiding dental appointments can mean dental problems are not identified until they become more difficult or uncomfortable. Regular examinations can help identify potential problems while they are still smaller and more manageable. Dental Centre Maroochydore specifically recommends routine examinations for this reason.

Dental x-ray exposure is extremely small, especially compared to medical x-rays. A standard digital dental x-ray is equivalent to the amount of x-ray that you are exposed to in a typical day from background radiation. You will be exposed to more radiation going to the beach or taking a flight. Provided that our strict radiation guidelines are followed, there is no scientific evidence of ill health effects attributed to dental radiation.
X-ray examinations are performed at specific intervals according to your individual risk factors, and are important to identify symptomless early tooth decay and disease under the gum that is not otherwise visible in the mouth. We routinely see patients who have no pain but have hidden decay picked up on X-Rays that is already very close to the nerve of the tooth. As standard we will take two small X-Rays of your back teeth every two years to check for hidden decay. A full mouth OPG or 3D cone beam X-Ray is taken at less regular intervals according to individual need. In addition we will X-Ray individual teeth and roots of concern as required.
