Dr Ian Scholes
Lead Dentist
I was educated at the University of Queensland and graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science in 1983. I worked in a private London practice for 20 years before returning to Australia in 2005 to join National Dental Care in Tweed. I am enjoying working at my current practice, and work hard to ensure the overall health and wellbeing of my patients is maintained at the clinic and at home.
I have known and loved the Tweed area for an amazing 45 years, and spend as much time as I can fishing, fossicking, and gardening in the area.
Miss Melena Mehrtens
Oral Health Therapist
Melena has recently relocated to Australia from New Zealand and now calls Palm Beach home.
She has been in the dental industry for over 10 years, starting as a dental assistant when she left school, Melena has worked in both the public and private sector in New Zealand. She then went on to study a Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Oral Health and graduated in 2019 as an Oral Health Therapist. Since graduating, Melena has spent most of her career in the public sector and has a passion for paediatric dentistry and loves working with children and adolescence. Melena believes having positive dental expenses from a young age helps set your children up to have better oral health throughout their life.
Currently, she has been focusing on Hygiene and working with adults, helping to improve their oral health and educate on gum health and periodontal diseases. She always strive to make her patients as comfortable as possible, especially when it comes to nervous dental patients.
When Melena isn't at work, you can often find her out exploring her new home with her dog Daisy.

I was born and raised in the Tweed Heads area, and consider myself quite the local! I have been in the dental industry for more than a decade, working as a dental assistant before completing a Bachelor degree in Oral Health Therapy at Griffith University in 2008. I have been on the National Dental Care team at the Tweed practice since 2009.
Keeping gums healthy is my forte! I love to see the transition of my patient's oral health, especially children. I love trying to make children have a fun time at the dentist.
In my spare time, I enjoy keeping fit and captaining the Pottsville women's soccer team.
I was born and raised in Tweed Heads, and have a strong connection to the area. I have studied at multiple education facilities, completing a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Diagnostic Radiography) at the University of Newcastle in 2001, a Graduate Diploma in MRS Ct Applications, Medical radiation science, CT at Charles Sturt University In 2005, and a Bachelor of Oral Health (Dental Science) and Graduate Diploma in Dental Science at Griffith University in 2010.
I spent 15 years as a radiographer before practicing dentistry. During this time my workplaces included NSW Health and Tweed Hospital. I love the health industry, and enjoy working with people and their teeth. I like all aspects of dentistry, but particularly preventative dentistry, oral surgery, and cosmetic dentistry.
I love working in a great family practice with a heavy belief in prevention and realistic treatment planning. I work hard to present a gentle and understanding manner, striving to be a good listener and having faith in my patients. In my spare time, I enjoy surfing, scuba diving, and just going to the beach with my two boys.
