Your Team - National Dental Care

Dr. Henry Gilkes

Dentist  |  BDS (Adel)

I graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1982.
From 1982 through to 1983 I worked in Hounslow in the United Kingdom. I returned to Australia in 1984, when I worked in the community of Robe as a dentist, and at West Lakes Dental until 1989. In 1989 I became a managing partner at West Lakes, and have been here ever since! I have worked hard to become skilled in all aspects of general dental practice, whilst still maintaining a special interest in oral surgery and implantology.

My ongoing education has included numerous courses to upskill in oral surgery, implantology, hypnosis, practice management and general dental clinical skills.

I am currently the SA state chairman for the National Dental Foundation (a philanthropic organisation that supplies pro bono dental treatment to the needy in our community).
I am also an active member of The Seattle Study Club, SA Osseointegration Society, the Australian Dental Association, and am registered with the Dental Board through AHPRA. I have been accredited with Admitting and Dental Surgical privileges at Western Hospital and accredited with Surgical Assistant privileges at Wakefield Hospital.

In my spare time I enjoy bike riding, photography, and windsurfing. I am married with two adult daughters.

Madeleine Gilkes

Oral Health Therapist  |  BOH (Adel)

I graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2012, with a Bachelor of Oral Health. Since then, I have regularly attended professional development lectures and courses to add to my education. I have been in practice working full time since graduating. During this time, I have worked at West Lakes Dental, Walkerville Dental and Victoria Park Dental Specialists providing orthodontic care. I enjoy children’s dentistry as I believe the first few years of a childs dental life are incredibly important and I like being a part of a positive experience. West Lakes Dental is a friendly, warm practice that has an incredibly passionate team in which I am proud to be part of. I am passionate about my job and provide high quality dental care in a calm, friendly dental setting. I care about my patients—not just their mouths. I am a member of the Australian and New Zealand Pediatric Dental Society, and make time to participate in the National Dental Foundations Dental Rescue Days—a charitable organisation that facilitates the provision of pro bono dental treatment to those in our society who cannot access timely dental care. I was lucky enough to be selected to fly with the RFDS to Marlee to provide dental care to locals who could not access dental care in 2012. My family have a history of working in dentistry; my father is a dentist, and instilled in me a similar enthusiasm. My interests outside of dentistry include travel, cooking and music —I have had a passion for the piano since I was 5.

Denise Jones

Dental Hygienist  |  Assoc. Dip in Dental Hygiene

I complete an Associate Diploma in Dental Hygiene at Adelaide TAFE in 1979, and have been working at West Lakes Dental ever since. I have continued to further my education in this time, regularly attending association meetings, seminars, and taking Continuing Professional Development courses. I knew I wanted to be a dental assistant since I was 16 years old, and an interest in dental hygiene developed from there. I enjoy my current practice, thanks to a friendly team who get along well with one another. I love the long-standing regular patients we receive, and feel I have really gotten to know them and their families over the years. Our surgery also has a fantastic view! In my spare time I like to keep fit, spend time at my ‘shack’, travel, read, and be with family and friends.

Renee Allen

Dental Hygienist  |  Diploma of Dental Hygiene

I graduated from the Gilles Plains College of TAFE in South Australia with a Diploma of Dental Hygiene, and have been in practice since 2005, working in Melbourne and Adelaide. I began working with the National Dental Care team at West Lakes Dental in 2007, and have been here ever since! I am passionate about educating patients on ways to improve their oral health, and devote time to tutoring students studying a Bachelor of Oral Health which I find both challenging and satisfying. At my current practice, I enjoy both the staff and the view! I work hard to make sure I am a gentle yet thorough hygienist. My interests outside of dentistry include reading and cooking.

Melissa Ford

Dental Hygienist

I graduated from the Gilles Plains College of TAFE in 1986 with a Diploma of Dental Hygiene. Since then, I have worked with many different dentists including Dr Durgood in Renmark, Dr Stanbeuicius, Dr Vagrona, and locum work with Dr Hobby and Dr Thomas. As a school student I always had an interest in science and health, and this led to an interest in dentistry in later years. I practice general dentistry and spend the majority of my time in a clinical setting. I am pleased to be part of a dental practice which maintains a high standard of dental care, and keeps up to date with the latest technology for our patients to benefit from. I work hard to be gentle yet thorough, and enjoy chatting with patients to make them feel comfortable. In my spare time, I keep fit through walking and paddle boarding, and enjoy dining out at Adelaide’s many wonderful restaurants. I also have an interest in growing fruit and vegetables, although not with a high degree of skill! I devote time to surf life saving with the Henley Community Garden.
