All Smiles on the Sunshine Coast: Meet Dr Mutaz Farjian, Lead Dentist at National Dental Care, Buddina

We chatted with Dr Farjian about why he chose to pursue a career in dentistry, his focus on supporting his patients however he can, and the number one tip he wants you to know about improving your oral health.

Dr Farjian, tell us a bit about your background and how you got into dentistry.

I started my career in dentistry back in 2004. The reason I got into the dental industry in the first place was actually because of my uncle, who was a dentist. Sadly he’s now passed away, but he was the person behind my decision.

I’ve also always wanted to help people who are disadvantaged in the community, which is something I can do in my role as a dentist - so I suppose that’s where my journey first started.

And what is it that you like most about dentistry?

I see a lot of patients who are deeply unhappy with their smile and it’s something that really impacts their confidence - some people might not have even smiled properly for years. When I work with them to address the issues - such as with a new set of veneers - it literally changes their life.

That’s not an exaggeration! I’ve worked with people who’ve gone on to meet their future partners, started enjoying their work again - all from the confidence of having a smile they’re happy with. Dental treatment can truly be a life-changing procedure.

You recently joined National Dental Care Group as Lead Dentist at our Buddina practice - what are you looking forward to about your role here?

While I previously worked in dentistry for many years, in 2014 I completed my Masters in Health Services Management and have since worked with Queensland Health and the Queensland government on various projects.

What’s great about the Lead Dentist role with National Dental Care Group is that it allows me to apply my specialties in both management and dentistry. Here at Buddina, I can combine my clinical and non-clinical skills in the one role, which is something I’ve always wanted to do.

When it comes to being a good dentist, what qualities do you think are most important to have?

Firstly, I’d say having excellent communication skills is a major and critical component of being a good dentist. In addition to that, I think empathy for your patients is incredibly important. When it comes to supporting patients, even the smallest acts of kindness can help - whether that’s asking the simple question “are you OK?” to someone who’s going through a tough time, or helping a patient set up a payment plan to manage the cost of their dental treatment.

What are we most likely to find you doing when you’re not at work?

In terms of sports, I really like soccer, which I play every week. I also do a lot of baking and cooking, and I enjoy trying different cuisines. And, of course, living up here on the Sunshine Coast, you can usually find me on the beach, which I love!

Finally, what’s your number one oral hygiene tip?

I’d have to say flossing - and not just doing it, but doing it right. A lot of people think they’re flossing correctly, but are actually damaging their gums - so making sure you have the right flossing technique is key to good oral health.
