At Star Family Dental in Lismore, we pride ourselves on our patient-focussed care. We believe that good dental habits start early and our team of Lismore dentists and hygienists are committed to helping local families establish great dental foundations.
Our commitment to long-term dental health extends way beyond the chair – we are enthusiastic in teaching kids how to take proper care of their teeth. Here are our top three tips to keeping your kid’s teeth in top shape.
Lead by example
Kid’s minds are like sponges and they absorb our habits, both good and bad, just by watching us. The best way to teach your kids good dental habits is to include them in your daily routine. When you wake up in the morning, establish a habit of brushing your teeth with your child and do the same before they go to bed at night. Some kids may need a little coercing so try to make it fun. It takes a while to develop dexterity, so make sure you supervise your kids while they’re brushing and remind them to spit afterwards.
Keeping decay away
Good dental hygiene is more than brushing and flossing. What we eat plays a huge role in keeping our teeth healthy. Try to establish healthy snacking habits as early as possible.
We try to be as realistic about it, so we know that avoiding sweet treats isn’t always possible. The best advice we can give you is to try and keep a healthy balance and encourage your kids to ditch the juice in favour of water.
A lot of people think that there’s no point taking their children to the dentist until all their baby teeth have fallen out. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Baby teeth tell us a lot about the future health of your child’s mouth. Oral hygiene starts way before your child’s teeth appear.
Start by wiping down your baby’s gums daily with a clean, wet cloth. When your child is almost two, they can start to use a small amount of toothpaste and a kid’s toothbrush. As a general rule of thumb, when your child starts developing teeth, you should take them to the dentist. Our friendly Lismore dentists will help you establish a solid dental routine and start your child on the path to a cavity-free childhood.
