Dr Amir Samad recently joined Springfield Central as Lead Dentist, bringing a wide range of skills, including extensive training in Implant surgery.
“I’m excited to guide the team,” says Dr Samad. “It’s a great opportunity to build up the practice with new services.” Dr Samad, who grew up in Pakistan where his father was a surgeon, also speaks Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Pashto for patients who are more comfortable with their original language.
“I am also looking forward to getting to know the local community and becoming a part of it,” says Dr Samad, who is married with a young son. “We lived in Cairns for almost a decade when this opportunity came up; we don’t like to move a lot. We want to find a house in the Springfield area and settle in. It’s a great climate and we already have friends in the city.”
Professional skills development
“It was a visit to a dentist as a teenager which inspired me to consider dentistry as a career,” Dr Samad recalls. “I was quite impressed and decided to study it at college. Since then I’ve continued to add to my skills and qualifications through professional development courses. It’s an ever-evolving field.
“The use of surgery for treatments like Implants is something that has really developed over the last couple of decades. I want implant treatments to be cost-effective and tailored towards our patient’s needs.”
While working in Cairns, Dr Samad was also a clinical supervisor at the James Cook University School of Medicine and Dentistry.
“I enjoy mentoring younger colleagues and it’s a great opportunity to do that as Lead Dentist,” he says. “It’s important to share your skills and experience in the practice and I look forward to working with the team here.”
Restorative dentistry is a particular interest for Dr Samad, with periodontal work often necessary for patients, particularly older ones.
“They may have smoked, they may not have had regular checkups and cleans and over the years they develop gum disease,” he says. “We can treat it and guide them to regularly practice good oral hygiene.”
“Sometimes they’ve had a broken tooth for a while or wanting to improve a tooth’s appearance. We can enhance or repair the tooth, particularly if it’s at the front of their mouth which can have a big impact in improving a patient’s life.”
“We also have interest-free payment plans for eligible patients needing major treatments.”
Outside of the practice, where will you be?
“I enjoy spending time with my family,” says Dr Samad. “Once we are settled into a new house we will have time for other things. I like playing and watching cricket. I hope to get the chance to visit the Gabba. I also like playing badminton.”
“This area has lovely surrounding areas, too. We will be able to drive down to the Gold Coast or up to the Sunshine Coast as well as getting to know Brisbane.”
