At McLeans Dental Brisbane CBD, we’ve been cleaning and filling teeth since the 1950s. During that time we’ve been asked a lot of questions about dental treatments.
One of the most common questions is ‘What is a crown and if the tooth is filled, why do I need one?’
What is a dental crown?
A crown is literally a cap which fits over the tooth to make it stronger and restore its shape to that of a normal tooth. Crowns are sometimes called ‘caps’.
Why do I need a crown?
Crowns are a great way to repair a tooth that’s been broken, heavily filled or weakened by decay.
We may use crowns to treat teeth that are discolouring or becoming transparent. If you have recently had a root canal, a crown will help keep the tooth strong and protect it from further infection.
Depending on the situation, your dentist may use a crown to anchor a bridge in the case of missing teeth.
Do crowns hurt?
If the tooth has had a root canal, you won’t feel anything and will very rarely need an anaesthetic.
If the tooth is sensitive or you’re anxious about the pain, talk to your dentist about it. We’re happy to talk you through it and find a way to ease your anxieties.
How long do crowns take?
Our Brisbane CBD dental surgery has the latest dental technology so we can fit your crowns in one short and painless visit using CEREC technology.
CEREC, short for ceramic restoration, allows us to take a digital scan of your mouth, use CAD to design the crown and print it using computer-aided milling or 3D printing.
While we do same-day crowns in most situations, we also do lab-made crowns when these are more appropriate. These can be completed over a few visits.
Will the crown feel different to my other teeth?
At first you may notice that the shape of the crown is slightly different to that of the tooth before it was crowned. It shouldn’t cause you any pain and within a couple of days will settle.
If you do notice the crown when you bite, your dentist may need to adjust the height of it. We can adjust your crown in minutes – it’s a simple and pain-free process.
